TikTok settles lawsuit with Florida teen over alleged social‑media addiction

TikTok reached a confidential settlement with a 15‑year‑old Florida teenager, identified only by the initials RKC, weeks before a trial slated to address platform liability for potential mental‑health harms caused by social‑media addiction. The settlement terms were not disclosed. The same teenager had earlier settled a similar claim with YouTube, leaving Meta and Snapchat as the only remaining defendants in a case scheduled to begin on July 27 in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit is viewed as a reference case for thousands of similar actions across the United States that allege platforms design features such as autoplay, infinite scroll and recommendation algorithms to encourage excessive use among minors. It follows other recent settlements, including a $6 million award to a separate teen and a joint $27 million payment by Meta, Snap, TikTok and YouTube to a Kentucky school district to avoid related litigation.
