TikTok settles three teen addiction lawsuits in California

TikTok has agreed to settle three lawsuits filed by minors who claim the platform’s design is addictive and harms their mental health. The settlements are confidential and will be finalized in written agreements.

The cases were chosen as bellwether trials from roughly 3,300 lawsuits consolidated in Los Angeles Superior Court, overseen by Judge Carolyn Kuhl. The plaintiffs are S.J., a 15‑year‑old from Illinois; P.M.Y., a 15‑year‑old from New Jersey; and K.D.B., an 18‑year‑old from Mississippi, each alleging self‑harm, anxiety, depression, addiction and eating disorders linked to platform overuse.

A trial for the remaining claims against Meta Platforms, Google’s YouTube and Snap Inc. is scheduled for October. Earlier related verdicts awarded $4.2 million against Meta and $1.8 million against Google.
