Tilburg removes over 100 bicycle bollards to improve safety
The municipality of Tilburg has begun removing more than one hundred bicycle bollards to improve road safety. The removal process is currently focused on the Reeshof and De Blaak neighborhoods, with the city conducting further investigations to determine which other bollards may need to be removed.
Local authorities are removing obstacles that are no longer strictly necessary to prevent illegal car traffic. The decision-making process involves following CROW guidelines and utilizing data from the Fietsersbond ‘Paaltjesmelder’.
According to Rob van Mierlo, chairman of FietsForum Tilburg, these bollards have contributed to dangerous situations, including incidents with fatalities in the region last year. Official records show approximately 400 single-vehicle bicycle accidents annually in Tilburg involving ambulance services, though the actual number is believed to be higher as many minor incidents go unreported.
