Tilburg serval recaptured after escaping into residential neighborhood

A serval named Django has been recaptured in Tilburg, Netherlands, after escaping from its enclosure in the Koestraat residential area. The African predator escaped through a rusted opening in its cage, marking the second time the animal has fled its enclosure, following a similar incident in May last year.

During its escape, the serval entered a neighbor's garden and killed two chickens. The animal was eventually lured back into a transport bench using the deceased poultry as bait. While the owner, Achraf, stated that the animal is not aggressive toward humans, the escape caused significant anxiety among local residents, some of whom expressed frustration over the recurring danger posed by keeping a wild predator in a residential neighborhood.

Experts from Stichting AAP noted that while servals are not typically life-threatening to humans unless cornered, they are wild animals with sharp claws and teeth. The incident highlights the complexities of the current Dutch regulations; while it has been illegal to acquire new servals as pets since July 2024, owners who held them prior to that date are permitted to keep them until the animals pass away.
