Brooklyn Bridge: NYPD fatally shoots knife-wielding man
An armed man was fatally shot by the New York Police Department on the Brooklyn Bridge early Friday morning. The incident began around 3:30 a.m. when authorities responded to reports of a man walking on the bridge's suspension cables.
Members of the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) arrived and spent approximately one hour attempting to negotiate with the individual. According to NYPD Assistant Chief Gerard Dowling, the man expressed a desire to die and claimed to be in possession of a bomb. Officers, using safety harnesses, attempted to convince him to descend to the roadway.
The situation escalated when the man began to descend the cable rapidly toward the officers. As he approached within approximately three feet of an officer, he extended a knife toward them. An officer positioned on the bridge roadbed discharged a single shot, striking the man.
The individual was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police recovered a knife and a flashlight at the scene and are continuing to investigate the man's claims regarding an explosive device. The shooting was recorded by police body cameras, and the bridge experienced temporary closures and traffic delays during the operation.
