Timiș County agricultural crops face severe soil drought

Severe soil drought is significantly impacting autumn crops in Timiș County, Romania. Reports indicate damage ranging between 35% and 80% across more than 13,400 hectares of autumn crops, with wheat, rapeseed, and barley being the most affected. Specifically, over 10,000 hectares of wheat have been impacted.

Codruț Ancheș, executive director of the County Directorate for Agriculture Timiș, noted that the lack of precipitation, combined with high costs for inputs such as fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides, has led to financial losses for farmers over the last four to five years. The drought has also hindered rapeseed planting; while most crops failed to germinate due to lack of rain, one farmer with an irrigation system managed to successfully plant approximately 800 hectares.

In the last agricultural year, Timiș County recorded a precipitation deficit of approximately 500 liters per square meter.
