Timișoara launches metropolitan zone as parking plan ignites local dispute

Timișoara officially became an extended city after local councillors approved the creation of the Inter‑community Development Association “Timișoara Metropolitan Zone,” linking the city with the nearby communes of Dumbrăvița and Ghiroda. Vice‑mayor Ruben Lațcău and the mayors of Dumbrăvița and Ghiroda highlighted joint goals on transport, education, infrastructure and greener urban projects, and stressed that the new structure will improve access to EU funding.

At the same time, a disagreement continues between the Timiș County Council and the Timișoara City Hall over a large parking facility near the County Emergency Hospital. County Council president Alfred Simonis proposed an underground lot on land he says is suitable, while the city argues the site is protected green space. The municipality has issued urbanism certificates for two alternative locations – on Aries Street and at the Liviu Rebreanu‑Costică Rădulescu intersection – and vice‑mayor Paula Romocean affirmed the move to provide parking for patients, families and medical staff.
