Timișoara mayoral elections stalled by legal challenges
The organization of early elections for the Mayor of Timișoara is currently blocked due to legal proceedings involving the incumbent mayor, Dominic Fritz. Alfred Simonis, President of the Timiș County Council, stated that while Fritz publicly supports holding elections quickly, his legal challenge against the prefect's order to terminate his mandate prevents the electoral process from starting.
Simonis argued that the procedure cannot be triggered until all legal avenues for contesting the prefect's order are exhausted. He accused Fritz of contradiction, claiming the mayor is taking actions in court that undermine his public statements regarding the desire for a new vote.
In response, former prefect Paul Finta of the USR party shifted responsibility to the government, suggesting that the PSD-led administration must take action. Finta argued that the decision to organize the elections rests with the government and called for the vote to take place no later than early December, accusing Simonis of using the ongoing legal battle as an excuse to delay the scrutiny.
