Timmy the rescued whale found dead off Denmark after German release
The young male humpback whale nicknamed “Timmy,” which had been stranded on a Baltic sandbank in March, was rescued by German authorities after several failed attempts to free it. The animal was placed in a water‑filled truck and transported to the North Sea, where it was released on 2 May.
Denmark’s environmental protection agency confirmed on 18 April that a dead whale spotted near the island of Anholt is the same individual. Agency head Geyn Hansen said, “It is confirmed that the large whale detected near Anholt is the same whale that was rescued in Germany and for which many efforts were made.” The finding ends a high‑profile rescue operation that attracted public attention and controversy over the handling of the release.
Reports noted that some crew members expressed relief at “getting rid of the burden,” while veterinarians involved said the whale was released “prematurely” and “secretly.” The death underscores challenges in marine animal rescue across national jurisdictions.
