Timor-Leste expands regional ties with Thailand and Bali

Timor-Leste is expanding its regional diplomatic and economic footprint following its integration into ASEAN. In Thailand, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão concluded an official visit aimed at establishing a strategic partnership covering defense, energy, and trade. The two nations intend to create a permanent dialogue mechanism to coordinate security efforts, specifically targeting transnational crime, human trafficking, and illegal fishing in the Indian Ocean. Additionally, discussions addressed energy cooperation regarding Timor-Leste’s natural gas resources.

Simultaneously, economic ties are strengthening with the Indonesian province of Bali. During the Bali-Timor-Leste Business Forum, officials expressed intent to intensify cooperation in tourism, agriculture, livestock, and trade. Tourism is a primary focus, with data showing that Bali hosted approximately 30,000 visitors from Timor-Leste by early October, signaling potential for new joint travel routes and expanded bilateral economic relations.
