Timor-Leste regional diplomatic and economic expansion
Overview
Timor-Leste has moved to expand its regional diplomatic and economic footprint following its integration into ASEAN. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão conducted an official state visit to Thailand, the first by a Timorese leader in 13 years, to meet with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The visit focused on development cooperation in sectors such as defense, security, trade, investment, food security, energy, and tourism. Following the visit, the two nations expressed intent to establish a strategic partnership and a permanent dialogue mechanism to coordinate security efforts against transnational crime, human trafficking, and illegal fishing in the Indian Ocean. Discussions also addressed cooperation regarding Timor-Leste’s natural gas resources.
In addition to ties with Thailand, Timor-Leste is strengthening economic relations with Bali, Indonesia. During the Bali-Timor-Leste Business Forum, officials discussed intensifying cooperation in tourism, agriculture, livestock, and trade, noting that Bali has already hosted approximately 30,000 visitors from Timor-Leste.
