Tipra Motha Party wins 34% of Tripura tribal seats unopposed
Ahead of the September 28 Village Committee elections in Tripura’s tribal areas, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has secured approximately 34 percent of the total seats unopposed. According to the Tripura State Election Commission, TMP candidates were elected without contest in 1,557 out of 4,597 total seats across 587 village committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also secured 81 seats, or roughly 2 percent, uncontested. Following the withdrawal of 1,069 nominations, a total of 9,820 candidates remain in the race. Polling is scheduled to take place in 2,954 seats across 44 blocks in eight districts.
The elections, which are being held after a 10-year hiatus, feature a contest between the BJP-led alliance—which includes TMP and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT)—and the opposition, including the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Congress party. Reports of political tension and incidents of violence have been noted in various districts.
