Albania protests clash with police over Kushner-linked tourism project
Protests in Tirana, Albania, have entered their 101st day as demonstrators clash with police outside the parliament. The movement, dubbed the ‘flamingo revolution’ due to protesters carrying pink bird symbols, began as an environmental campaign to protect the Zvernec nature reserve and the Vjosa-Narta lagoon from a massive luxury tourism development.
The disputed project, estimated to be worth between 1.4 and 1.6 billion euros, is linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Critics argue the development will cause irreversible environmental damage to protected coastal areas and bird habitats, specifically threatening flamingo populations, while also limiting public access to the coastline.
What began as an environmental movement has evolved into a broader anti-government challenge against Prime Minister Edi Rama’s administration. Protesters have accused the government of corruption and lack of transparency, demanding Rama’s resignation and the repeal of laws that they claim favor private investors over environmental protections. On Tuesday, clashes erupted as protesters attempted to breach police cordons to reach the parliament building following the summer recess, resulting in several detentions and the throwing of eggs and tomatoes at law enforcement and parliamentary vehicles.
