Tirzepatide shows higher weight loss efficacy than semaglutide

A clinical study published in The New England Journal of Medicine indicates that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound, achieved an average body weight reduction of 20.2% in patients with obesity and no type 2 diabetes. This compares to a 13.7% reduction observed with semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy.

Tirzepatide functions as a dual agonist, acting on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors to influence insulin response and fat storage. Semaglutide acts as a GLP-1 receptor agonist to signal satiety and slow digestion. While both medications are effective, individual responses vary based on hormonal levels and tolerance.

Research also suggests that both semaglutide and tirzepatide may reduce systemic inflammatory markers. However, scientists have not yet determined if this reduction is a direct effect of the drugs on the immune system or a secondary result of weight loss and metabolic improvements. Common side effects for these treatments include gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting.
