Titanic shipwreck remains unrecovered due to memorial status
The wreckage of the Titanic, discovered in 1985 by oceanographer Robert Ballard during a joint US-French expedition, remains on the ocean floor at a depth of approximately 3,900 meters. The ship, which sank in 1912, was found in a heavily decomposed state, broken into two distinct pieces.
Several factors contribute to the decision not to salvage the wreck. Primarily, the site is regarded as a massive maritime grave, as approximately 1,500 people lost their lives during the sinking. Consequently, the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have agreed to treat the site as a maritime memorial, declaring that the wreckage should be preserved rather than recovered.
