RMS Titanic shipwreck status and preservation

Overview

The RMS Titanic wreckage, located approximately 3,800 to 3,900 meters deep in the North Atlantic, remains on the ocean floor following its discovery in 1985. The ship is currently in a heavily decomposed state and is broken into two pieces.

Scientific observations note that no human remains or skeletons have been found within the wreck. This is attributed to victims in life jackets being carried away by currents, or deep-sea scavengers consuming remains of those trapped inside. While personal items like clothing and shoes suggest human presence, skeletal remains have not been recovered.

The site is treated as a maritime memorial by the United States and the United Kingdom, as it serves as a grave for the approximately 1,500 people who died during the 1912 sinking. Consequently, there are agreements to preserve the wreckage rather than salvage it.
