Italy schools face heatwave concerns as experts urge delayed reopening

Medical experts and local officials in Italy are calling for the postponement of the school year start in southern regions due to an extreme heatwave. The Società italiana di medicina ambientale (Sima) has recommended delaying classes until the autumn equinox to protect the health of students and staff.

Sima president Alessandro Miani highlighted that only 11% of Italian schools possess air conditioning, and these systems are often limited to administrative offices rather than classrooms. Experts also warned of rising CO2 levels in crowded, poorly ventilated rooms, which can lead to physical distress and fainting.

In response to the heat, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara announced a 20 million euro fund for cooling devices. However, political figures like Irene Manzi have criticized this as a temporary measure, calling for a structural national plan to adapt schools to climate change. Local authorities in areas like Crotone and Vasto have also expressed concerns regarding the safety and comfort of students in uncooled buildings.
