Widespread Power Outages Disrupt Italian Communities Including Palermo, Catania and Tivoli

Residents in several Italian towns have been left without electricity for days as blackouts spread across the country. In the Sant’Agata village near Catania, the outage began on 18 July, affecting streets such as Via dei Platani and Via degli Olmi and causing particular hardship for the elderly, disabled and families whose appliances have been damaged. Councilor Santo Russo demanded urgent action to restore service.

In the north of Palermo, the Arenella district and surrounding streets have endured repeated blackouts, prompting councilor Natale Puma to label the situation an emergency and call on the municipality, the civil protection authority and electricity provider e‑Distribuzione for immediate restoration. Similar disruptions were reported in Tivoli after a severe fire damaged the power grid, and in Castronovo di Sicilia where a blaze at a hydroelectric plant’s transformers caused both fire damage and loss of electricity. Authorities across the affected areas have appealed for swift repairs amid extreme summer temperatures.
