Italy widespread power outages

In mid‑July 2026, extensive electricity blackouts struck several Italian communities. The first reports on 18 July described outages in the village of Sant’Agata near Catania, repeated blackouts in Palermo’s Arenella district, and power loss in Tivoli following a severe fire that damaged the grid. Local officials and councilors called for urgent repairs, labeling the situation an emergency as heat‑wave demand surged.

By the end of July, the disruptions in Sicily prompted organized complaints. A citizen group (Comitato Addaura) and the business association Assoesercenti filed formal grievances against the utility E‑Distribuzione, demanding details on repairs, investment plans, and assurances of reliable service. The complaints were copied to regional and national authorities, highlighting repeated outages, voltage fluctuations, equipment damage, and revenue losses.

The situation evolved from initial emergency responses to coordinated civil and commercial pressure on the electricity provider, underscoring growing frustration over prolonged blackouts amid extreme summer temperatures.
