Organ donation statistics released in Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia
In observance of World Organ and Tissue Donation Day, health authorities in Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia have released updated statistics regarding transplant procedures and waiting lists.
In Argentina, INCUCAI reports that 1,742 organ transplants and 4,211 tissue transplants have been performed in 2026. Despite these figures, 7,403 patients remain on the waiting list for organs. Kidney transplants lead the procedures, followed by hepatic and cardiac transplants. The country's donation system is governed by the Ley Justina, which presumes all adults are donors unless they have explicitly opted out.
In Mexico, regional reports highlight successful donation protocols. In Hidalgo, the ISSSTE reported 65 beneficiaries of musculoskeletal tissue grafts. In Tlaxcala, the state has recorded 96 donations over five years, exceeding the national average. Additionally, in Michoacán, the FGE successfully coordinated a multi-organ donation following a legal review.
In Colombia, the National Institute of Health (INS) reported that 965 organ transplants were conducted between January and September 2026. As of late September, 4,117 people were on the national waiting list, with the majority awaiting kidney transplants.
