Organ and tissue donation trends in Latin America
Overview
Health authorities in Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia are reporting updated statistics regarding organ and tissue donation programs and waiting lists.
In Argentina, the National Central Coordinator for Ablation and Implantation (INCUCAI) reported that 1,742 organ transplants and 4,211 tissue transplants were performed in 2026. These transplants were derived from 796 donors. While kidney, hepatic, and cardiac transplants are leading procedures, 7,403 patients remain on the waiting list for organs. The donation system continues to be governed by the Justina Law, which presumes adults are donors unless they have expressed opposition. In the province of Santa Fe, the local coordinator (CUDAIO) reported 98 donation processes this year, making it the second highest in the country.
In Mexico, regional successes continue. In Hidalgo, the ISSSTE reported 65 beneficiaries of musculoskeletal tissue grafts. Tlaxcala has recorded 96 donations over a five-year period, a figure that exceeds the national average. In Michoacán, the FGE successfully coordinated a multi-organ donation following a legal review. Additionally, in Meoqui, the Municipal Health Directorate has launched an awareness campaign, offering psychological support through six primary health care centers to assist families with donation decisions.
In Colombia, the National Institute of Health (INS) reported that 965 organ transplants were conducted between January and September 2026. As of late September, 4,117 people were on the national waiting list, with the majority awaiting kidney transplants.
