Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation expands use for psychiatric treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is gaining prominence as a non-invasive neuromodulation method for treating various psychiatric conditions. The procedure uses an electromagnetic coil to deliver targeted magnetic pulses to specific brain regions, regulating nerve cell activity without the need for anesthesia or surgical intervention.

Primarily FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder, TMS is increasingly utilized for patients who have not responded to standard antidepressant medications. Clinical data suggests that approximately 50% of patients who fail to respond to initial medications experience a meaningful response to TMS, with one-third achieving full remission. Beyond depression, the technology is being applied to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and nicotine addiction.

During treatment, patients remain fully awake and can communicate with their surroundings. Sessions typically last between 3 and 40 minutes. While generally well-tolerated, common side effects include mild headaches, scalp discomfort, or minor facial muscle twitching. In some regions, such as Humboldt County, the expansion of local access to TMS is helping to reduce the logistical barriers previously faced by patients who had to travel long distances for specialized care.
