Expansion of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation use

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is being increasingly adopted as a non-invasive neuromodulation method for treating various neurological and psychiatric conditions.

In Argentina and Spain, medical centers have integrated TMS into rehabilitation and mental health programs. In Argentina, the Cener de General Galarza health centre utilizes the technology to complement treatments for stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and treatment-resistant depression. In Spain, the Montevil Centre for Integrated Treatment has established a dedicated TMS room to work alongside psychotherapy and other therapies, with reports indicating the treatment can reduce depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts within hours.

Globally, the technology is gaining prominence for patients who do not respond to standard antidepressant medications. While primarily used for major depressive disorder, TMS is being applied to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and nicotine addiction. Clinical data suggests that approximately 50% of patients who fail to respond to initial medications experience a meaningful response to TMS, with one-third achieving full remission. The procedure involves delivering targeted magnetic pulses to specific brain regions without the need for anesthesia or surgery, allowing patients to remain fully awake during sessions.
