TNO, Perovion, and Toyo Seikan partner on perovskite solar technology

Dutch research organization TNO, its spin-off Perovion Technologies, and Japan’s Toyo Seikan Group Holdings have formed a partnership to advance flexible perovskite solar cell technology toward industrial production.

The collaboration aims to address commercialization challenges by exploring roll-to-roll manufacturing and advanced encapsulation materials. Perovion intends to utilize a roll-to-roll manufacturing process to commercialize cells developed at TNO, with plans to begin construction of a perovskite solar film factory in the Netherlands by 2030. Toyo Seikan will contribute expertise in manufacturing, module integration, and advanced materials through its MiraNeo brand.

Perovskite solar cells are considered a promising next-generation technology due to being thin, flexible, and lightweight. This makes them suitable for applications where conventional glass-based silicon panels are impractical, such as vehicle surfaces, lightweight roofs, façades, and historic buildings. The partnership seeks to overcome existing limitations regarding performance and durability in real-world conditions.
