Tobacco production and revenue decline in Southern Brazil

The 2025/2026 tobacco harvest in Southern Brazil has seen a decline in both production volume and revenue. According to data from the Association of Tobacco Growers of Brazil (Afubra), total production reached 710,229 tons, a 1.3% decrease from the previous season. The Virginia variety, which accounts for approximately 90% of the region's production, saw a 1.3% reduction, while Burley production grew slightly by 0.8% and Common tobacco fell by 11.6%.

Revenue for the 2025/2026 harvest in Southern Brazil is projected to reach R$ 13.06 billion, representing a 10.4% drop compared to the R$ 14.57 billion recorded in the 2024/2025 period. This decrease in gross income is attributed to pricing fluctuations during the commercialization period.

In Venâncio Aires, planting has reached approximately 55% of the projected area for the 2026/2027 crop. However, the total cultivated area in the municipality is expected to shrink from 8,650 hectares to between 8,300 and 8,400 hectares. Afubra noted that the harvest faced heterogeneous conditions, with some regions benefiting from favorable rains while others suffered from frost, hail, and periods of drought.
