Tobacco production trends in Southern Brazil
Overview
The 2025/2026 tobacco harvest in Southern Brazil has experienced a decline in both production volume and revenue. According to the Association of Tobacco Growers of Brazil (Afubra), total production reached 710,229 tons, a 1.3% decrease from the previous season.
While Burley production saw a slight increase of 0.8%, the Virginia variety—which comprises approximately 90% of the region's production—decreased by 1.3%, and Common tobacco fell by 11.6%. Projected revenue for the harvest is R$ 13.06 billion, a 10.4% drop from the R$ 14.57 billion recorded in the 2024/2025 period, a decline attributed to pricing fluctuations.
In Venâncio Aires, the total cultivated area is expected to shrink to between 8,300 and 8,400 hectares. Afubra noted that the harvest was impacted by heterogeneous weather conditions, including favorable rains in some areas alongside frost, hail, and drought in others.
