Eduardo Cunha: TRE-MG denies 2026 federal deputy candidacy
The Regional Electoral Court of Minas Gerais (TRE-MG) has unanimously rejected the candidacy of former Chamber of Deputies President Eduardo Cunha for federal deputy in the 2026 elections. The court ruled that Cunha remains ineligible until February 2027.
The decision was based on several factors, including his 2016 removal from office for breach of parliamentary decorum and a conviction for administrative improbity in Rio de Janeiro. The court also addressed legal arguments regarding Complementary Law 219/2025, which attempted to change how ineligibility periods are calculated; the TRE-MG declared these specific changes unconstitutional, maintaining that the period should be counted from the end of the legislature in which the misconduct occurred.
