Brazilian electoral courts combat campaign disinformation

Overview

Regional electoral courts in Brazil have issued several rulings to combat disinformation and the manipulation of data during political campaigns.

In Paraná, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-PR) issued an injunction against Sergio Moro and Edson Vasconcelos’s campaign, ordering the removal of social media posts within 24 hours. The court found the campaign had potentially misled voters by associating internal polling percentages with an official poll registered with Electoral Justice.

In Tocantins, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-TO) issued rulings against disinformation targeting gubernatorial candidate Professora Dorinha. One ruling ordered the removal of WhatsApp videos containing false claims of a criminal record and synthetic content. A separate ruling fined a blogger R$ 15,000 for spreading manipulated posts regarding seized funds, with the judge describing the individual as a “habitual and qualified recidivist offender.”
