Todd Blanche nominated as US Attorney General amid sheriff endorsement and special counsel push
The Western States Sheriffs’ Association, representing sheriffs from 19 western states, issued a letter urging the Senate to confirm Todd Blanche as Attorney General before the end of summer. The sheriffs cite his experience, focus on border security and rural law‑enforcement challenges, and his tenure as acting attorney general since Pam Bondi’s removal in April. They express readiness to partner with a confirmed Blanche on policies that support sheriffs, officer safety, and immigration enforcement.
Separately, a coalition of plaintiffs known as the Broadview Six filed motions in federal court seeking the appointment of a special counsel to investigate alleged misconduct by the Justice Department in the prosecution of ICE protesters. Their request includes an evidentiary hearing on possible criminal contempt, expanded discovery of communications within the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office and DOJ, and limited discovery to recoup attorneys’ fees. The coalition argues that the DOJ’s actions in the Minnesota ICE protest indictment reflect broader wrongdoing that warrants independent investigation.
