US DOJ under fire over Epstein files, Blanche hearing

Overview

The GAO’s April 2026 review of the Justice Department’s handling of released Jeffrey Epstein files sparked a sweeping congressional oversight effort. House Oversight Committee hearings have featured former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, survivors Roza and Sarah Kellen, billionaire Leon Black and former Clinton aide Doug Band. Chairman Rep. James Comer’s subpoenas seek all nondisclosure agreements and a formal deposition. Judge Emmet Sullivan’s February ruling ordered the DOJ to publish every redacted segment of the Epstein files or justify suppression, setting a July 2 deadline. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche asked the court to deny a request for further unredacted records and to grant a 60‑day extension to consider an appeal. On 12 July a federal judge held Blanche in contempt for refusing to comply with the 2025 order, imposing a $1,000‑a‑day fine until compliance. The same week the DOJ issued grand‑jury subpoenas to New York Times reporters investigating a Qatar‑donated Air Force One, drawing criticism from the Committee to Protect Journalists. A Florida judge also ruled that a $1.776 billion “anti‑weaponization” settlement granting former President Trump and his family immunity from future IRS audits was illegal and referred Blanche and other attorneys to bar associations. Tom Dupree warned the actions depart from DOJ norms. Blanche’s nomination to become attorney general moved to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on 14 July. Republicans remain split, while Democrats plan to press him on redaction errors in the Epstein releases, the abandoned anti‑weaponization fund, and his public support for former President Trump’s Jan. 6 narrative. Separately, newly released federal documents show Jeffrey Epstein received a $25 million fee for work connected to Swiss bank Edmond de Rothschild’s 2015 DOJ settlement, with communications indicating multiple meetings between Epstein and bank head Ariane de Rothschild.
