Attorney General Senate confirmation Department of Justice anti-weaponization fund swearing-in

Todd Blanche was sworn in as the 88th U.S. Attorney General during a ceremony in the Oval Office on Monday, August 10, 2026. Blanche, a former personal attorney for President Donald Trump, succeeds Pam Bondi.

His confirmation followed a narrow 50-49 Senate vote on Saturday. The approval process was highly contentious; all Senate Democrats voted against him, and Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins also voted against the nomination. Blanche secured enough support from holdout Republicans, including Senator Bill Cassidy, to pass.

Blanche’s nomination faced scrutiny regarding his involvement with a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” intended to compensate individuals facing prosecution related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. While some lawmakers characterized the fund as a “slush fund,” Blanche stated that the fund will not move forward during his tenure.
