TOFROM YAESU TOWER to open near Tokyo Station
The TOFROM YAESU TOWER, a 250-meter-tall, 51-story mixed-use skyscraper, is set to open near the Yaesu exit of Tokyo Station on September 10. The facility will house offices, commercial spaces, a theater, medical facilities, and a bus terminal.
To integrate the new structure with the historical identity of the Yaesu district, the project features a unique public art program titled ‘City of Mermaids.’ Created by renowned Japanese director Shunji Iwai, the narrative weaves together the area's history—from the arrival of Dutch sailors in the 1600s to its evolution into a merchant hub—with elements of fantasy. Eight different creators have translated Iwai’s story into various media, including sculpture, video, and spatial installations, distributed throughout the building.
The commercial zone, ‘TOFROM YAESU Shop & Restaurant,’ will feature 68 shops under the theme ‘New & Classic.’ The design aims to preserve the atmosphere of the former narrow alleys by placing many storefronts facing outward toward the streets and utilizing an irregular, ‘stacked box’ exterior. Notably, several long-standing local establishments, including a 170-year-old kappo restaurant, are returning to the area as part of the redevelopment.
