Togo implements banking and pharmaceutical regulatory reforms

Togo is implementing significant regulatory reforms across the financial and health sectors. The government has adopted new banking regulations to align with West African Monetary Union (UMOA) standards, expanding the scope of supervision to include payment institutions, electronic money providers, and banking holdings to enhance financial stability.

In the health sector, Togo is establishing an autonomous National Agency for the Regulation of Medicines and Other Health Products. This agency aims to combat the circulation of falsified or low-quality products by strengthening market surveillance, pharmaceutical inspection, and pharmacovigilance.

Regarding food security, Japan has signed an agreement to provide 200 million yen (approximately 800 million FCFA) to Togo through the Kennedy Round project for 2026. This funding will facilitate the purchase of rice to be sold at subsidized prices to vulnerable populations, helping to stabilize the national market. Additionally, the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) has provided modern scientific equipment to Togo's National Laboratory for Food Safety and Phytosanitary Security (LaNSA) to improve food quality control and international export competitiveness.
