Togo expands digital e-ID program to over 6 million people
Togo has reached a significant milestone in its digital identification rollout, with over 6 million people registered under the e-ID program as of late September 2026. The system assigns a Unique Identification Number (NIU) linked to biometric and demographic data, providing a reliable method for identity verification and access to social, financial, and administrative services.
The initiative is part of the West Africa Unique Identification for Regional Integration and Inclusion (WURI) program, which is supported by the World Bank and ECOWAS. Following registration drives in the Savanes, Maritime, Plateaux, and Central regions, the campaign is set to expand to the Kara region, which is the final area slated for coverage.
In addition to domestic efforts, Togo is extending identification services to its citizens abroad. In Tenkodogo, Burkina Faso, the Togolese consulate organized a mobile enrollment session in collaboration with the Association of Togolese Residents in Tenkodogo (ATRT). This session successfully enrolled 123 Togolese nationals, facilitating the issuance of necessary consular documents to assist citizens living outside the country.
