Togo faces power disruptions due to gas pipeline maintenance

Togo is facing potential electricity disruptions from October 7 to 22, 2026, due to scheduled maintenance on the West African Gas Pipeline. The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) will temporarily suspend natural gas deliveries to thermal power plants during this period.

To mitigate the impact on households and businesses, the state-owned utility Compagnie énergie électrique du Togo (CEET) announced it will increase its use of more expensive liquid fuels to maintain generation capacity. Despite these measures, CEET warned that some neighborhoods and localities may still experience power interruptions.

The situation highlights Togo's ongoing energy challenges, including rising demand and a heavy reliance on imported natural gas. While the Nangbéto hydroelectric dam provides a strategic source of power, its production is insufficient to fully compensate for the loss of gas-fired generation.
