Togo gas pipeline maintenance and power disruptions
Overview
In early October 2026, Togo faced potential electricity disruptions due to scheduled maintenance on the West African Gas Pipeline. The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) suspended natural gas deliveries to thermal power plants, prompting the state-owned utility Compagnie énergie électrique du Togo (CEET) to increase the use of expensive liquid fuels to maintain capacity. Despite these efforts, CEET warned that some areas might still experience power interruptions.
By late October, WAPCo reported significant progress on the Lomé pipeline maintenance. Following the successful replacement of a subsea valve and an inlet shut-off valve between October 14 and October 17, the project moved into its final phase. This stage involves draining and drying the pipeline for internal inspection using a magnetic flux leakage tool to ensure integrity. Gas transport is expected to resume by October 27, 2026.
