Togo implements road safety and infrastructure preservation measures
In Togo, efforts are underway to improve road safety and protect national infrastructure from premature degradation. The National Union of Independent Road Drivers (UNCRIT) is conducting a capacity-building workshop in Lomé from October 13 to 15. The training focuses on professional road risks, eco-driving, and safety co-production to help drivers reduce accidents and fuel costs.
This initiative follows a period of high accident rates in Togo, which resulted in 314 deaths and 4,695 injuries during the first half of 2026. UNCRIT Secretary General Amèvi Houessou emphasized that road safety is preventable and that accidents directly threaten the livelihoods of independent drivers.
Simultaneously, the Autonomous Road Maintenance Financing Society (SAFER) is addressing the issue of heavy vehicle overloading, which threatens the durability of the country's road network. To protect significant investments in national roads and bridges, SAFER is enforcing axle load controls through weighing stations, such as the one at Djéréhouyé. These measures aim to comply with UEMOA Regulation No. 14 regarding the weight and dimensions of heavy goods vehicles to extend the lifespan of the road infrastructure.
