Togo road safety and infrastructure preservation
Overview
In Togo, authorities and professional organizations are implementing measures to improve road safety and preserve national infrastructure. Following a period in the first half of 2026 that saw 314 deaths and 4,695 injuries, the National Union of Independent Road Drivers (UNCRIT) held workshops in Lomé focused on professional risk management, eco-driving, and accident prevention.
To protect the durability of the road network and bridges, the Autonomous Road Maintenance Financing Society (SAFER) is enforcing axle load controls through weighing stations. These actions aim to address heavy vehicle overloading and ensure compliance with UEMOA Regulation No. 14 to extend the lifespan of national infrastructure.
