Togo: Jean-Pierre Fabre challenges Gnassingbé administration's legitimacy

Jean-Pierre Fabre, president of the Alliance nationale pour le changement (ANC), has claimed that the administration of Faure Gnassingbé is increasingly isolated and lacks international allies. However, diplomatic records suggest the Togolese government remains active in regional mediation, including roles within the African Union regarding the Great Lakes crisis, and continues to engage with European partners.

Fabre has also pointed to a January 2026 ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice concerning Togo’s 2024 constitutional reform. While the court determined that the conditions of the reform's adoption constituted an unconstitutional change of government under the African Charter on Democracy, the ruling did not formally abrogate the 2024 Constitution or dissolve the institutions of the Fifth Republic.
