Tokyo hits record 35 consecutive days of rainfall

Tokyo has recorded 35 consecutive days of rainfall, setting a new historical record since measurements began in 1886. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that central Tokyo received 629 mm of rain between the start of September and September 28, nearly triple the typical monthly volume.

Experts attribute this extreme weather anomaly to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. The prolonged period of precipitation has significantly reduced sunshine, with the city recording fewer than 50 hours of sun over the past month.

Severe weather events, including Typhoons Krovanh and Dujuan, contributed to the intense rainfall. Earlier in the month, Typhoon Dujuan caused flooding and landslides in Chiba Prefecture, resulting in eight deaths. Medical professionals have warned that the combination of persistent rain, high humidity, and low atmospheric pressure may impact the physical and mental health of residents, potentially causing symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.
