Tokyo ends record 37-day consecutive rainfall streak

Overview

Tokyo has ended its record-breaking streak of consecutive rainfall, which lasted from August 27 to October 2. The 37-day period marks the longest continuous rain in the capital since record-keeping began in 1886, surpassing the previous 2019 record of 33 days.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that Tokyo received 696.5 mm of rain since the start of September, more than triple the typical seasonal amount. This extreme weather was driven by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, which increased ocean temperatures and atmospheric moisture. The prolonged wet conditions were further exacerbated by a stalled autumn atmospheric front and multiple typhoons, including Typhoon Krovanh and Typhoon Dujuan.

The prolonged wet weather and typhoons caused significant disruptions. Dujuan was linked to at least 13 deaths from flooding and landslides, the cancellation of 275 flights, and the suspension of JR rail services. In Chiba Prefecture, landslides, road collapses, and power outages affecting over 600 households forced more than 100 people to evacuate.

In eastern Japan, September recorded the highest rainfall and lowest sunshine duration since 1946. These conditions impacted tourism in Nikko and Chiba, and caused rice crops to fall in the agricultural sector. While the rain has finally ceased in Tokyo, weather conditions remain unstable across the region.
