Tokyo museums announce major autumn 2026 exhibition seasons

Major museums in Tokyo are preparing for autumn exhibition seasons in 2026.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) will host its inaugural ‘MOMAT Autumn Days’ from September 29 to November 15, 2026. The event features the ‘Autumn Premium Collection,’ which includes the return of three Important Cultural Properties by Kaburagi Kiyokata after seven years. The museum will also host a collaboration with Fujin Gaho magazine and a ‘Family Day’ event for children from October 8 to October 16. Artist Yoshitomo Nara is scheduled for an artist talk on October 9.

The Tokyo National Museum will hold ‘A Journey Through Asia: Colorful Asia’ at the Toyokan from September 15 to November 8, 2026. The exhibition focuses on the use of color in Asian art and crafts, featuring items such as multi-colored glass candlesticks, agate pomegranates, and ancient Egyptian figurines. The museum is also implementing inclusive initiatives, such as ‘Chatter-Free’ viewing environments and audio guides to assist visitors with visual impairments.
