Tokyo museum autumn 2026 exhibition season

Major museums in Tokyo are preparing for their autumn 2026 exhibition seasons.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) will launch its inaugural ‘MOMAT Autumn Days’ from September 29 to November 15, 2026. This season includes the ‘Autumn Premium Collection,’ featuring the return of three Important Cultural Properties by Kaburagi Kiyokata, as well as an artist talk by Yoshitomo Nara.

Separately, the Tokyo National Museum will host ‘A Journey Through Asia: Colorful Asia’ at the Toyokan (Oriental Pavilion) from September 15 to November 8, 2026. The exhibition focuses on the use of color in Asian art, crafts, and archaeological artifacts, such as Qing dynasty glass candlesticks and ancient Egyptian figurines. To improve accessibility, the museum is implementing inclusive initiatives like ‘Chatter-Free’ viewing environments and audio guides for visually impaired visitors. The exhibition will also feature gallery talks and performances by the Tokyo University of the Arts Javanese Gamelan Club, with commemorative merchandise available in museum shops.
