Tokyo breaks record with 37 consecutive days of rain

Tokyo has ended a record-breaking 37-day streak of consecutive rainfall, a period lasting from August 27 to October 2. This marks the longest continuous rainy spell recorded in the Japanese capital since meteorological records began in 1886, surpassing the previous record of 33 days set in 2019.

Since the beginning of September, Tokyo recorded 696.5 mm of rain, more than triple the seasonal average. The extreme weather was driven by a combination of typhoons, including Typhoon Krovanh and Typhoon Dujuan, as well as a stalled autumn atmospheric front. Experts attribute the prolonged wet conditions to the influence of El Niño and broader climate change.

The heavy rainfall caused significant disruptions across Eastern Japan. Typhoon Dujuan resulted in at least 13 deaths from flooding and landslides, and led to the cancellation of 275 flights and the suspension of JR rail services. In Chiba Prefecture, landslides and flooding caused road closures, power outages for over 600 households, and forced more than 100 people into evacuation centers. The prolonged lack of sunshine has also impacted local industries and agriculture, including tourism in Nikko and rice farming in the region.
