Toledo chemical leak forces evacuations and shelter-in-place orders

A chemical leak at the MC Tank Transport terminal in Toledo, Ohio, prompted emergency evacuations and shelter-in-place orders on Tuesday night. The incident involved a 5,500-gallon tank containing glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in coatings and plastics.

Authorities ordered nearly 1,000 residents within a one-mile radius to evacuate, while residents within a three-mile radius were instructed to shelter in place. More than 50,000 people were advised to stay indoors as a precaution. The Ohio EPA attributed the leak to an error during material transfer.

At least 57 people were treated by hospitals for symptoms including eye, skin, and respiratory irritation, nausea, and dizziness. A Lucas County sheriff’s deputy also sought medical treatment after becoming ill at the scene.

Due to the volatility of the remaining chemicals, officials decided to allow the tank to vent naturally rather than attempting to plug the leak, citing a persistent explosion risk. Local schools, including 57 in the Toledo Public Schools district, were closed as a result of the incident.
