Toledo chemical leak at MC Tank Transport terminal

Overview

A chemical leak involving glycidyl methacrylate occurred at the MC Tank Transport terminal in Toledo, Ohio, following an error during a material transfer process. The incident, which the Ohio EPA attributed to a transfer error, involved a 5,500-gallon tank and prompted emergency evacuations for nearly 1,000 residents within a one-mile radius, while others were advised to shelter in place.

At least 57 people required hospital treatment for symptoms such as respiratory irritation, nausea, and dizziness. Due to the risk of explosion, officials opted to allow the tank to vent naturally.

By October 23, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced that all evacuation orders had been lifted. Officials determined the site was safe after hazmat teams completed testing following the venting process. MC Tank Transport has accepted responsibility for the incident, which was caused by an employee error that triggered a chemical reaction due to improper temperature levels. An investigation into the event is ongoing.
