Tolhuin faces energy instability amid power outages and gas supply disputes

The town of Tolhuin is facing significant energy instability, characterized by both service interruptions and legal disputes over utility access. Residents have experienced frequent electricity outages, including a recent general blackout caused by a technical failure at a gas plant where an unexpected valve opening impacted local power generation turbines.

Simultaneously, the Federal Defender’s Office has intervened regarding gas supply cuts. Federal Public Defender José Bongiovanni warned that cutting gas to vulnerable families during the winter months violates fundamental rights to health and life. The office has already secured a federal court injunction to prevent service disconnection for an elderly resident in a vulnerable situation. The intervention follows reports from municipal authorities and neighbors regarding a surge in service disconnections and meter removals since May.
