Energy instability in Tolhuin
Overview
The energy situation in Tolhuin has transitioned from infrastructure maintenance to a period of instability. In late July, the Dirección Provincial de Energía completed a scheduled upgrade of the 13.200-volt medium-voltage line, replacing aging wooden poles and components to improve service reliability.
By late August, the town faced significant energy instability. Residents experienced frequent electricity outages, including a general blackout caused by a technical failure at a gas plant involving an unexpected valve opening. Additionally, the Federal Defender’s Office intervened following reports of increased gas service disconnections. Federal Public Defender José Bongiovanni stated that cutting gas to vulnerable families during winter violates “fundamental rights to health and life,” leading to a federal court injunction to prevent disconnections for certain elderly residents.
