Tom Homan targets birth tourism visa loopholes
White House border official Tom Homan stated that the Trump administration is working to close visa loopholes used by Chinese and Russian nationals for “birth tourism.” This practice involves foreign citizens utilizing visa-free programs to enter U.S. territories, such as the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, to give birth so their children automatically obtain U.S. citizenship.
Homan identified China and Russia as the “two biggest abusers” of this practice, warning that it poses a national security vulnerability because these children will eventually gain the right to vote and hold public office. The push follows a legal battle over birthright citizenship; while the Supreme Court previously struck down an executive order on the matter for violating the 14th Amendment, the administration has issued narrower orders specifically targeting birth tourism.
Republican lawmakers have also introduced legislation, such as the “One Nation, One Visa Policy Act,” to prevent Chinese citizens from entering U.S. territories without valid visas. Additionally, Homan noted that federal authorities are monitoring a large influx of Chinese males of military age, suggesting these movements may be coordinated by the Chinese government.
