Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers release Origins 1971-1978 box set

To mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a new multi-disc box set titled Origins 1971-1978 has been released. The collection, which includes various configurations such as a Deluxe Edition and a 4-CD set, documents the musical evolution of Petty and his band.

The set features 57 tracks, including 27 previously unreleased songs. It covers Petty’s early work with the band Mudcrutch, his brief solo period, and the breakthrough studio albums Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and You’re Gonna Get It!. Highlights include newly remixed editions by engineer Ryan Ulyate, a 1977 live performance from the Record Plant, and footage from the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test.

Adria Petty, daughter of the late musician, co-produced the project alongside the Petty Legacy LLC team. She noted that the collection serves as a musical diagram of how Petty and the Heartbreakers developed their sound. Founding members Ron Blair and Stan Lynch have also reflected on the band’s early years and their influence on the country rock genre.
